Romeo & Zooliet: Shakespeare at the Zoo
Romeo & Zooliet is a family-friendly stage adaptation produced for the St. Louis Zoo, in partnership with the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival. The production features original animal puppetry by Michael Curry, known for his work on Broadway’s “The Lion King” and “Frozen” along with Olympic and Super Bowl ceremonies. It is adapted from the award-winning graphic novel “The Stratford Zoo Midnight Revue Presents: Romeo and Juliet” by Ian Lendler.
How the Story Unfolds:
Romeo and Zooliet tells the story of animals inside the Saint Louis Zoo performing their own production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” In this animal–centered version, the Montagues are herbivores and the Capulets are carnivores. When they share the stage, a prairie dog and a grizzly bear form a surprising bond that unites the zoo.
